Marital satisfaction has been widely acknowledged as a crucial determinant of marriage stability. One key factor that impacts marital satisfaction is the type of behavioral activation and inhibition system present in an individual. Individual differences in the behavioral brain system play a significant role in how couples respond to interpersonal problems, resulting in distinct behavioral feedback. If utilized correctly, this system can positively impact the quality of a couple's relationship and promote family stability. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between behavioral activation/inhibition systems and marital satisfaction with the mediation of mentalization. The research was conducted using a correlation method, and the statistical population comprised married individuals residing in Tehran in 2021. Of these, a sample size of 370 was selected using a multi-stage cluster sampling method and administered a demographic questionnaire, the Enrich Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire, the Behavioral Activation and Inhibition Scale, and the mentalization Questionnaire. The results of the path analysis indicated that the behavioral inhibition system with the mediation of mentalization is effective in marital satisfaction, and the inhibition system has a negative and meaningful relationship with marital satisfaction and mentalization. On the other hand, mentalization had a direct, positive, and significant impact on marital satisfaction. Additionally, the activation system significantly impacted marital satisfaction with the mediation of mentalization. The activation system had a direct, positive, and significant impact on mentalization, but only a positive and direct relationship between the activation system and marital satisfaction could not be established. These findings suggest that the behavioral activation and inhibition system can predict marital satisfaction directly and indirectly through mentalization. Consequently, it is recommended that experts in the field of family examine these structures to promote marital satisfaction among couples.

Couple therapy is considered as the treatment of choice for common distresses and problems within couples' relationships. Different models of couple therapy have been developed with the shared aim of treating the couples' distressed relationship. The present article has two purposes. Firstly, this article introduces the principles and techniques of a new couple therapy model named paradoxical couple therapy or PTC-based couple therapy. Secondly, this article evaluates the effectiveness of PTC-based couple therapy for the treatment of couples' distressed relationship. A husband and wife participated in the present study to receive a PTC-based couple therapy. Evaluation of clinical indices as well as treatment outcomes were performed based on Mental Health Inventory (MHI-28), Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State Questionnaire (GRIMS), and the Treatment Outcome Subjective Rating Scale (TOSRS) at intake, the end of treatment sessions, and in a 2 and 4 years follow-up. The results indicated a considerable increase in the couples' score of psychological well-being as well as a considerable decrease in their score of psychological distress and relationship problems. Evaluation of the treatment outcomes also revealed that the treatment was completely successful. The couple rated their progress and improvement at the end of the treatment 90% for the wife and 95% for the husband. Evaluation of the treatment outcomes in a 2 and then 4 years follow-up showed that the treatment changes were satisfactory, stable and permanent, during which no relapse was happened. These results corroborate the deep and permanent effects of the PTC-based couple therapy in the shortest possible time. The influential mechanisms of “timetable for periodical management” and "timetable for paradoxical reciprocity negotiation", as the two main PTC-based couple therapy techniques, and their adjustment to the treatment outcomes are explained in the present article. The PTC-based couple therapy, as a very short-term, effective, efficient and yet economical approach is introduced and suggested for the treatment of couples' distresses and problems.

Spiritual/religious perfectionism is one of the determinants of couple adjustment. Spiritual health, that has a strong relationship with spiritual/religious perfectionism, also has a determinant role in couple adjustment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the corelation of spiritual/religious perfectionism spiritual health with levels of couple adjustment. Three hundred and seven married individuals (148 men, 159 women) from a community sample living in Tehran participated in this study. All participants were asked to complete Spiritual/Religious Perfectionism Scale (SRPS), Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS), and Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS). Spiritual/religious perfectionism revealed a significant positive correlation with measures of couple adjustment. Spiritual health also revealed a significant positive correlation with couple adjustment. It can be concluded that both spiritual/religious perfectionism and spiritual health can be considered as determinants of couple adjustment. The findings also may support a new dimension of perfectionism, i.e. spiritual/religious perfectionism, separate from nonspiritual/nonreligious perfectionism. Teaching and encouraging spiritual/religious perfectionism within the educational systems from childhood in family and school can help implications of this kind of perfectionism to be achieved.

Intimacy in marriage is essential for maintaining marital and family relationships. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of the Gottman Couple Therapy (GCT) and the Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) methods on marital intimacy. For this purpose, 36 couples were selected from among all couples referring to Aramesh, Ofogh, and Khanevadeh in Shahrood counseling centers in 2017. The subjects were matched based on having a score of Spanier (DAS) below average. They were then randomly assigned to two experimental and one control groups. Participants were asked to complete the marital intimacy Needs Questionnaire (Bagarozzi, 2001) in the pretest and posttest stages. Afterwards, one group received GCT for 10 weeks, and the other group was subjected to EFCT for 9 weeks, while the control group was on the waiting list. The results showed that both experimental groups showed improvements in Marital Intimacy than the control group. A significant difference was also found between the effectiveness of GCT and EFCT methods on Marital Intimacy in couples, so that the GCT group was more successful in Marital Intimacy. Although significant changes were observed in all components of marital intimacy in both experimental groups compared to the control group, the two experimental groups were significantly different in four components namely, Emotional, Psychological, Sexual, Physical and Recreational. Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that GCT couple therapy is more effective on couple's intimacy than the emotional couple therapy.

Identifying factors behind sexual disorders is of paramount importance. Knowing how these variables work and impinge on each other can improve the quality of couple's sexual life, and reduce the psychological and sociological costs of prevention and treatment of sexual disorders. The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties and their impact on the relationship between attachment pathologies and sexual disorders. A total of 450 individuals with sexual disorders (227 females, 223 males) participated in this study. Participants completed the Adult Attachment Inventory (AAI), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and Golombok-Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS). The results indicated that attachment pathologies had a significantly positive association with sexual disorders and emotion regulation difficulties. Emotion regulation difficulties also showed a significantly positive association with sexual disorders. The results of path analysis reveald that the relationship between attachment pathologies and sexual disorders was mediated by difficulties in emotion regulation. Based on the results of the present study the impact of secure attachment on both emotion regulation mechanisms and sexual functioning was approved. Using the findings of the present study to prevent sexual disorders as well as treatment of couples, sexual disorders in couples can be considered as practical implications of the study.

Marital satisfaction is one of the factors that can bring happiness and satisfaction into marital life. Identifying variables that influence marital satisfaction is very important and essential to help maintain a marriage. Studies show that sexual knowledge and attitude as well as positive and negative affects can influence marital satisfaction in different ways. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of positive and negative affects in moderating the association of sexual knowledge and attitude with marital satisfaction. To this end, 300 married Afghans (148 males, 137 females, 15 unspecified) living in Kabul participated in this study. Participants were asked to complete the Knowledge and Attitude Scale (SKAS), the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS), and the Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS). Results showed that sexual knowledge and attitude had a positive relationship with marital satisfaction. Positive and negative affects also had a statistically significant positive and negative relationship with marital satisfaction, respectively. The results also revealed that the relationship between sexual attitude and marital satisfaction was moderated by negative affects, however, it was not moderated by sexual knowledge. The moderating effect of positive affects on the association of sexual knowledge and attitude with marital satisfaction was not statistically significant. Based on the findings of the present study, it can be concluded that some affects can play a decisive role in the association of sexual knowledge and attitude with marital satisfaction. Identifying such affects as well as preventing them from being intensified, will have an influential impact on both marital and satisfaction and family relationships

Abstract :Interactions between family members in childhood, especially the parent-child relationship, affects how individuals behave in interpersonal relationships in adulthood. The aim of the present study was to examine the mediating role of interpersonal problems in the relationship between parenting styles and marital problems. A total of 249 volunteers (93 men, 156 women) from Tehran family courts participated in this study. All participants were asked to complete Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-30), and Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS). Authoritative parenting style showed a significant negative association with marital problems while authoritarian parenting style was significantly in positive association with marital problems. Permissive parenting style showed a negative association with marital problems; however it was not statistically significant. Interpersonal problems also showed a significant positive association with marital problems. Analysis of the data revealed that interpersonal problems mediated the relationship between parenting styles and marital problems. Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that some kind of parenting styles might develop interpersonal problems. Marital problems and couples’ dissatisfaction could be consequences of such problems in the later stages of life.

Abstract: Sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment are the important aspects of married life that strictly affect the quality and stability of the relationship between couples. Studies have shown that several factors including psychological, social, economic, personal and demographic characteristics affect the sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment. The aim of the present study was to predict the levels of sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment based on job variables, commitment, intimacy and sexual knowledge and attitude. For this purpose, 100 employees of the Oil Company (50 expatriate, 50 non-employees) were selected as sample group using a convenience sampling method. Participants completed The Golombok-Rust Inventory of Sexual State Questionnaire (GRISS), The Golombok-Rust Inventory of Marital State Questionnaire (GRIMS), Table of job information, Dimensions of Commitment Inventory (DCI), Intimacy Scale (IS), and the Sexual Knowledge and Attitude Scale (SKAS). The results showed that no significant correlation existed between sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment with job variables, while the commitment, intimacy and sexual knowledge and attitude had a positive relationship with sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment. Also, sexual satisfaction could be predicted by intimacy and sexual knowledge and attitude. Marital adjustment was also predicted by the commitment and intimacy. The results also showed that among the variables, intimacy had the largest share in prediction of sexual satisfaction and commitment had the largest share in prediction of marital adjustment. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that job variables do not affect sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment, while the commitment, intimacy and sexual knowledge and attitude play a determining role in prediction of sexual satisfaction and marital adjustment.

Quality of couple's relationship and their marital adjustment are influenced by several factors. Basic psychological needs and parental bondings are considered as important determinants for marital adjustment and quality of their relationships. The present study aimed to examine the moderating role of parental bonding on the relationship between basic psychological needs satisfaction and marital adjustment. A total of 278 married individuals (131 men, 147 women) living in Yazd city participated in the study. Participants were asked to complete the Basic Needs Satisfaction in General Scale (BNSG-S), Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS), and Parental Bonding Inventory (PBI). Results showed that basic psychological needs satisfaction had a significant positive association with marital adjustment. Parental care and parental over protection showed positive and negative associations with marital adjustment, respectively. The relationship between basic psychological needs satisfaction and marital adjustment was moderated only by maternal care. According to the findings of the present study, it can be concluded that the relationship between basic psychological needs satisfaction and marital adjustment is not a simple linear one, but somewhat is influenced by parental bonding.

One of the long-term consequences of the parenting styles is the effect it has on the marital satisfaction of the children. An association between the basic psychological need satisfaction with parenting styles and marital satisfaction of the children has been approved. The aim of the present study was to examine the moderating role of basic psychological need satisfaction on the relationship between parenting styles and children's marital satisfaction. Two hundred and seventeen (123 women and 94 men) married participants completed Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), Basic Needs Satisfaction in General Scale (BNSG-S), and the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital State (GRIMS). The results indicated that the authoritative and permissive parenting styles had a positive significant association with marital satisfaction of their children, whereas the authoritarian style used by parents had a negative significant association with their offspring's marital satisfaction. The results also revealed that the authoritative parenting style had a positive significant relationship with the basic need satisfaction, whereas the mothers' authoritarian style had a negative significant relationship with the basic need satisfaction. No significant relationship was found between the fathers' authoritarian style and the permissive parenting style with the basic needs satisfaction. The results also revealed that the basic psychological need satisfaction moderated the relationship between the mothers' permissive style and their offspring's marital satisfaction. According to the findings of the present study, it can be concluded that the levels of children’s marital satisfaction are possibly influenced by their basic psychological need satisfaction as well as the parenting styles.

The main purpose of the present study was to explain adjustment to infertility indices in terms of relationship quality, couples' beliefs, and social support. A total of 100 couples (100 men, 100 women) participated in this study. Participants were asked to complete the Adjustment to Illness Scale (AIS), the Golombok Rust Inventory of Marital state (GRIMS), the Survey of Personal Beliefs (SPB), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). The results showed a significant negative association between marital problems and adjustment to infertility. Irrational beliefs and social support showed negative and positive correlations with adjustment to infertility, respectively. No significant difference was shown between men and women in terms of adjustment to infertility. The results revealed that adjustment to infertility could be explained by indices of marital relationship quality, personal beliefs, and social support. Based on the results of the present investigation, the importance of psychosocial characteristics of infertile couples, as well as routine medical services, is suggested. This can lead the couples to more adjustment to infertility and improvement of their mental health state.
